    SUSTAIN Project Management System

Building sustainable solutions small or large, requires a mature system of project management that ensures that complex changes happen both successfully and reliably. Words like “Change”, “Projects”, “Transitions”, “New”, “Improved”, and even “Life-Cycle-Managed” are all words and expressions that describe the right time to look for proven project management process.

Projects need not have physical results; they might build organizational change, efficiency, or new policies in democracy or government. Many thousands of projects must be able to run side-by-side so that hundreds of projects can work cooperatively – and this cooperation needs a best-practice methodology that absolutely guarantee success reliably.

Reliable success in change is critical because numerous surveys of projects run by PMP graduates, and others, have confirmed that 70%+ of projects fail to meet stated goals.

Project Management Certification can no longer be a simple checkbox on a resume so that an unqualified HR recruiter can find it easily, rather – Project Management Certificate holders must possess skills and experience proven to lead successful projects; projects that meet their goals every time.

After running 300 projects in 25+ Project Management Offices (PMO) myself, I have never worked in a Change “Department” or Project Management Office (PMO) that adhered to PMBOK method – and I know of no professional PMOs that use it because we realize that it cannot work reliably. Most mature Change Organizations use a PMLC (Project Management Life Cycle) Method instead – which is much closer to the SUSTAIN method. SUSTAIN takes PMLC further too…

Why is it important to get Project Management right?

    • McKinsey and Company & Here … A recent survey of business executives indicates that the percent of change programs that are a success today is… still 30%. Less than 1-in-3 transition programs are a success.
    • IBM … Nearly 60 percent of projects aimed at achieving business change do not fully meet their objectives.
    • Harvard Business Review … The brutal fact is that about 70% of all change initiatives fail.
    • Forbes/Towers Watson … A new study by Towers Watson has found that only 25% of change management initiatives are successful over the long term.
    • Connor Partners … Change practitioners have some culpability for the atrocious 70% failure rate of change initiatives.

The following two articles are attempts to explain the origin of this 70% statistic and suggest that there is evidence that the figure is a myth:

These discussions provoke the interesting discussion of “How should we measure success/failure in the context of change initiatives?” 72% of Nations internationally are in a “collapse trending” due to unsustainable decisions and status-quo within those countries. We cannot take water from a stone so we have to be cautious of the economic resources that we exhaust just as we must be cautious of exhausting our environmental resources.

Do all changes need to be built? No they don’t – and we are going to try to save you a lot of time and expense by establishing clear criteria in what is, and what is not, a “worthwhile” project for just this reason.

Sustain is PMLC, Agile and SCRUM compliant; it is simple to learn, powerful to use, and will make your projects in technology, democracy, government, business, education, construction, – anything and anywhere – to a successful completion. The only time that you are ever going to fail to succeed is when SUSTAIN Certified Leads are not given authority to close projects when that is a warranted outcome too.
